It is no longer news that the Federal Government of Nigeria had finally scrapped off POST University Tertiary Matriculation Examination in the admission process.We were expecting the decision would be like most other decisions they make and at the end of the day,they fail to implement them.With the conduct of 2016/2017 admission without POSTUTME,we can see that the decision has come to stay .
So,with the scrapping out out of POSTUTME,it means that admission will now be conducted using JAMB UTME and WAEC,based on 50:50 allocation.That simply means that JAMB will c arry 50% of your admission requirement while O'level[WAEC,NECO,GCE or NABTEB] carries 50% of your admission requirement.With this,it now means that JAMB will be highly competitive
henceforth.If you score 200 or even 220,it is not even enough at all to earn you admission.Assuming you are applying for Law or medicine,it means you have to score at least 290 in JAMB.
On the part of O'level,WAEC will now also be very competitive.This time around,it does not just end in making WAEC with credits as you are not even sure of admission with it.It requires you to work for straight As if you actually want to be certain about admission,especially candidates opting for professional highly competitive courses.
Explained below is the new method of calculating the point system newly adopted by JAMB;
First, if a candidate submits only one result which contains his/her relevant subjects,the candidate earns instant 10 points.Candidates can use NECO, WASSCE, November/December WASSCE etc, but any candidate who has two sittings only gets 2 points. So this means that candidates with only one result are at an advantage but only just.
Furthermore,they agreed that the “next point grades fell into the O’ Level grades where each grade would have it equivalent point as stated below ;
A=6 marks,
B=4 marks,
C=3 marks.
So, the better the candidates’ grades, the better his or her chances of securing admission
“The next point is the UTME scores in which each score range has its equivalent point as summarized below :
180-200=20-23 marks,
200-250=24-33 points,
251-300=34-43 points,
300-400=44-60 points.
From the breakdown, JAMB explained that each category would contain five JAMB results per point added.
For instance, a candidate with 180-185 gets 20 points, while a candidate with 186-190 gets 21 points.
So,from the above,we have succeeded in entailing what is expected of candidates if they must be admitted.
